BRUSSELS (ANP/BELGA) – The meal couriers of the internet platform Deliveroo are self-employed, the labor court in Brussels ruled. There is no reason to change the cooperation contracts of the couriers into an employment contract, the court said, which deviated from the position of the labor authorities in Belgium, the unions and a number of former Deliveroo couriers.
According to the labor authorities, the couriers are not allowed to work as “sharing economy service providers” with self-employment status, but must be employed as employees. They, together with thirty couriers and two unions, demanded the date in court, with everything that goes with it, such as insurance, holidays, minimum wage and pension accrual. the labor court did not agree.
One said of the company saying “good news for couriers who appreciate the flexible work Deliveroo offers them”. According to him, the court describes a number of issues such as self-employment, the freedom to organize working hours and the absence of hierarchy.
Deliveroo has been active in Belgium in thirteen cities since September 2015. Last year, around 3,500 bicycle and scooter couriers worked for the British company, delivering meals to customers’ homes for 3,000 Belgian restaurants.
