Homeless people also take care of order in the streets of Prague 7. The cleaning company part gives the cleaning opportunity to workers who find it difficult to find urban and keep jobs. In the autumn, Sedmička also launched another pilot project, in which “people from the street” are directly involved in cleaning work.
“We believe that it is necessary to work with homeless people and not leave them without help. At the same time, however, it is necessary to reduce the burden that is placed on their surroundings. We have field workers on the streets every day to deal with this. Our aim is to try to give people on the street a chance to return to normal life. We therefore involve them in the cleaning of the city district. If they need this help, they can get back on their feet, gain self-sufficiency and permanent housing. For some it has already worked well, with others it is a longer run. It’s important not to give up, everyone deserves a second chance. “ said the mayor of Prague 7 Jan Čižinský (KDU-ČSL).

In recent years, the model of involving people in difficult life situations in the cleaning of streets and other public spaces has proved its worth in Prague 7. “Our cleaning company operates as a social enterprise. Citizens who use work for Prague 7 to return to normal life are given the opportunity here. Among them are the employment office, people from hostels or, for example, people after serving a sentence – they all find it very difficult to find a job in the long run. Instead of providing money to private cleaning companies, we offer where they help. ” said the councilor of Prague 7 Jiří Knitl (Prague itself), who is responsible for the care of public space.
In October of this year, the city district launched a pilot project to involve homeless people in cleaning up problematic areas. “The project offers homeless people the opportunity to earn extra money through a short-term brigade and at the same time involves them in caring for the area where they occur and have their ties there. In this way, we want to mitigate the effects of the presence of homeless people on the state of public space, while helping these people to solve their problems and give them a chance to get rid of the bottom. ” supplemented by the Prague 7 councilor for social and health policy Jakob Hurrle (Prague itself).
In two months, 12 people are cleaning up as part of the project. The workers got their districts, which they take care of regularly. Every weekday is cleaned around the Salvation Army in Tusarova Street or around the Holešovice Railway Station. Three times a week, part-time workers also clean the Vltava embankment from Hlávek Bridge to Libeň Bridge. Regular additional cleaning seven days a week was also set around the Vltavská metro station.
In the spring of 2019, 23,830 homeless people lived in the Czech Republic, of which more than two and a half thousand were children. Most homeless people are in the Moravian-Silesian Region and Prague (over three thousand), while the least are in the Liberec and South Bohemian Regions.
