a Calais kite given to the Pope
Posted
After two and a half days of traveling in Greece, Pope Francis made a scathing appeal to European leaders, demanding a radical change in their attitude towards migrants. During this visit, he received a symbolic gift from the parish of Calais (Pas-de-Calais).
A gift symbolizing the situation in Calais (Pas-de-Calais). On the plane to Cyprus, a journalist gave to Pope Francis a kite made from the canvases of a migrant camp from Grande-Synthe (Pas-de-Calais). It all started in early October, when a priest and activists began a hunger strike. Loup Besmond de Senneville, correspondent for the newspaper La Croix in Rome (Italy), offered to give a gift to the Sovereign Pontiff during his Greek visit scheduled for December. They choose to create a kite with tent fabrics, a base after the dismantling of camps by the police last November. “He carefully received where these paintings come from. He seemed moved by this gift.”, explains the journalist.
After keeping the secret, the vicar of the parish of Calais revealed the information to his parishioners. Some allow themselves to dream of the papal room in their city. Pending a possible visit, the Sovereign Pontiff, traveling to a migrant camp in Greece, asked the world to open their eyes to the refugee situation to end a “shipwreck of civilization”.
