Toulouse-Matabiau: a transport hall to create “the station of the 21st century”
The Occitanie region is in talks about the transport hall, the future multimodal entrance to the station, on the Marengo side. A 74 million euro project for Grand Matabiau quais d’Oc scheduled for 2028.
The forecourt of Matabiau has just been completely redone. And if motorists persist in wanting to have them dropped off minute in front, in front of regular traffic jams at the arrival and departure times of trains which are most their habits, some will have to change by 2028.
It is indeed on this date that the Halle des transports should be put into service on the Marengo side. This new building planned by the Occitanie region should then be one of the major entrances, if not the main one, for an enlarged Matabiau station, presented as “the station of the 21st century”, capable of accommodating a tripling of attendance compared to today, by 2030.
Attendance tripled in 2030
“With the high-speed line, the 3e metro line and the ongoing densification of regional express trains, and the railway developments in the north of Toulouse made possible by the arrival of the LGV, additional capacity is needed ”, summarizes Jean-Luc Gibelin, vice-president of the region in charge of transports.
The regional authority, responsible for transport in Occitania, has just launched, on November 10, a public consultation, until December 10, on its Halle des transports project. This structure, which will be built by 2028 Marengo, on the current site of the regional SNCF management and its car park, between the station and Marengo, has been the multimodal hub of the Grand Matabia area, quais d’Oc .
Next to a bicycle parking area, the hall will articulate exchanges between trains, metro (lines A and 3e line), Tisséo bus, bicycles, pedestrians or even cars with undoubtedly a car park nearby, carpooling, carsharing and taxis. Only the Arc-En-Ciel buses from the bus station are not included, for the moment, in the loop. “Discussions are underway on the bus station,” recalls Jean-Luc Gibelin, “interurban transport is the responsibility of the region, and metropolitan transport is the responsibility of Toulouse Métropole. The metropolis and the region are associated within Europolia, which manages the Grand Matabiau quais d’Oc program ”.
Co-construction and sustainable building workshop
Studies will be launched at the end of the ongoing public consultation to better define the program of the future Transport Hall. An architectural competition will be organized. Population, residents and associations will be involved, via co-construction workshops, in the genesis of the hall project.
This is part of the “Occitanie sustainable building” approach, with the aim of obtaining a biodiversity label for the exchange hub. “The hall should contribute to the region’s approach to positive energy, comments Jean-Luc Gibelin, in terms of isolation, sustainable construction and materials, use of external light, internal equipment”.
Shops, leisure activities, regional services and coworking spaces are also planned on site.2 of offices as if the covid had not existed ”, moderates the regional elected representative.
