Nymburk has opened a footbridge across the Elbe due to a pandemic today, it will cancel Sunday’s event
Originally, the footbridge was to be put into operation at the end of September. It was built by Hochtief for 129 million crowns. The city received a subsidy from the State Fund for Transport Infrastructure, which will cover all eligible costs. Nymburk will pay about 11 million crowns.
Today’s opening of the new footbridge was not missed by dozens of people who walked around the footbridge for the first time around 16:00. People took a photo, a so-called selfie, or took a footbridge. “Opening a modern footbridge is a great pleasure and a relief for us and the citizens of the city. I am glad that the company managed the entire construction without serious complications, “said Mayor Tomáš Mach (Nymburk calmly).
The footbridge was approved today, so nothing prevented its opening. “Nymburk was preparing for a big holiday, the opening of a new footbridge, but we must respect government regulations, which complicated our situation at the last minute, and we do not want to risk the health of our fellow citizens. Let’s not take the Christmas atmosphere completely, we will enjoy it more intimately. The Přemyslid Square will light up together with the tree and decorations, there will be a nativity scene and Santa’s office. I promise you that we will enjoy the ceremonial moment of the opening of the building for decades, when the epidemic situation allows it again, “said Mayor Tomáš Mach (Nymburk calmly).
Work on the new footbridge has been slightly delayed, due to a coronavirus pandemic, as well as a delay in the delivery of the steel structure. The builders settled the central part of the bridge deck using a unique technology, which, according to bridge construction specialists Petr Vítek, was probably used for the first time in the Czech Republic. The middle part of the footbridge, about 70 meters long, was assembled on the shore. “The part was moved above the water by means of retractable tracks, he brought, the ship was flooded under it and it was previously launched on the ship,” Vítek said. The ship then set off about 300 meters to the pillars, where even with the middle part of the footbridge, it sounded 90 degrees across the riverbed.
The ferry, which has replaced the footbridge since 2018, will operate until the end of this year. The city had the original footbridge demolished in 2018 due to a state of emergency. It was of the same construction and from the same designer as the footbridge in Prague-Troja, which collapsed into the Vltava in 2017. The new footbridge with a length of 228 meters is located in the axis of the former footbridge, connecting the Zálabí district with the city center. The proposal for the new Lávka was prepared by the company SHP – Stráský, Hustý and partners. The company’s managing director and author of the design is designer Jiří Stráský, who designed the footbridge in Prague-Troja and the previous one in Nymburk.
The original footbridge closed Nymburk for pedestrians in December 2017, ships were not allowed to pass under the footbridge from June 2018, the city at the same time closed the area on both banks under the footbridge. Operation on the river was resumed after two months on August 8, after the demolition of the footbridge.
