Covid’s patients are heading to Prague from Brno, and relatives have prevented the transport
Very complex logistics, dozens of paramedics in special suits and a demanding night. A total of nineteen covid patients are heading from the Bohunice and St. Anne’s University Hospitals to Prague facilities. The two largest hospitals in Brno take care of more than 300 covid patients, they need to relieve the overworked staff and they are preparing for the highest attack in the coming weeks.
A special car of the Prague ambulance Fénix arrived before nine in the morning for ten people who are on oxygen but do not require intensive care. It is adapted for mass transport of patients. “Another five patients are transported by colleagues from the Samaritan Association of the Czech Republic. We will meet them in Brno. These patients will travel with a private carrier, “said Jana Poštová, a spokeswoman for the Prague ambulance.
There is a specialized team of experts in Fénix. “Including an intensivist, if the condition of any of them is stated unexpectedly,” said Ondřej Ludka, a medical officer at the Brno University Hospital.
These patients go to the Prague hospitals in Homolka, Bulovka and the General University Hospital.
Four patients will also go to Prague for artificial lung ventilation. Two of the Brno University Hospital are transported by helicopter, the man and the woman from St. Anne are transported by the South Moravian Rescue Service.
“Both patients are connected to transport fans for the purpose of transport and are transported by a special biohazard ambulance,” said Dana Lipovská, spokeswoman for St. Anne’s Hospital. The ambulance and the police escort left Brno at half past nine in the morning. There is one doctor and two paramedics in each.
The South Moravian intensive care coordinator Vladimír Šrámek pointed out that this will probably only be a short-term solution. “We’ll see how the pandemic continues, now we’ve released our hands for about 48 hours – so that we can maintain center care in both teaching hospitals while helping smaller hospitals, which are starting to have huge problems.”
According to Lipovská, there were 105 positive people in the hospital at eleven o’clock today, of which twenty were in a very serious condition at the anesthesiology and resuscitation clinic and the ICU of the 1st orthopedic clinic. Another 19 patients lie in other ICUs.
Some families did not want the transfer
They decided to transport the doctors and the hospital management yesterday. Preparations took all night. “It was very difficult. Unfortunately, in addition to the patients, their families, who did not want to transport many patients, also got involved. We picked all night and the changes took place until this morning, when some people gave up the ferry. They are used to their region, but if we make room for others, we will be able to take care of more people, “Ludka explained.
The situation in the largest Moravian hospital is very tense. There are now 190 covid patients hospitalized. “Reserves are minimal. Every patient, being in a standard ward, can get worse quickly and require intensive care. There is a critical point. We no longer have beds for intensive care. On Monday, we will try to create the last covid ICU for orthopedics. It is not a spatial matter, but a personnel one, “said Ludka.
The hospital lacks hundreds of paramedics due to quarantines or caring for their own sick children. “The care for other patients is very tense. We don’t have a chance to cover it personally, “said Ludka.
At the same time, the outlook for the coming weeks is not optimistic. The number of people infected has increased in recent days, which is always reflected in hospitals about two weeks apart. “We have a teleconference with Professor Dušek (head of the Institute of Health Information and Statistics, editor’s note) and he shows us the forecasts. They warn that the numbers will increase by mid-December. As Moravia reddened us, the Czechs will soon turn red. The capacity will be filled there as well, “added Ludka.
There are more than 900 patients with covid in South Moravian hospitals, the most in the country. Medical staff in two teaching hospitals are slightly free to help smaller hospitals in the region. For example, in Kyjov or Vyškov, they have already declared an extreme state of emergency and they have a full intensive care bed.
