Waste collection Prague: More expensive, according to the opposition, it is unfair
In Prague, people now pay for waste collection according to the size of the containers and the frequency of collection. However, the system is no longer possible due to the amendment to the Waste Act and the city must approve a new one by the end of the year. The law gave municipalities to set the price for waste up to a crown per liter of container content, and a new city ordinance proposes a month of the maximum amount. Now the price according to the proposal is between 25 and 74 pennies per liter.
It follows from the proposal that the planned increase will be directly proportional to the size of the container. Residents of housing estates and apartment buildings, which have the largest containers with a capacity of 1,100 liters, will pay the most. While so far about 46,000 crowns a year have been paid for them at the collection three times a week, it should now be 85,800 crowns. According to the material, this per capita is 421 crowns more per person per year.
A significant increase in prices will also apply to containers with a volume of 240 liters, most often used in smaller apartment and apartment buildings. So far, the permanent annual collection at a frequency of 4728 crowns once a week, now it will be 6240 crowns. When calculated per capita, it costs 216 crowns per capita more. According to the document, a four-member household pays 54 crowns a year for each member for 120-liter bins, which mostly have family houses.
The discount should only apply to the smallest containers. For example, for 80 liters, homeowners should save 304 crowns per person per year from next year. According to the document, these containers are used primarily for family houses with one or two inhabitants.
According to the material, the increase is supposed to partially compensate people for being new free brown containers for bio-waste, which according to the municipality make up 30 to 40 percent of mixed waste. “If citizens take the opportunity to order a biowaste container free of charge, thanks to the amount of their mixed municipal waste,” the material said.
Criticism of the opposition
The opposition ODS criticized the increase in waste on Monday. She doesn’t like that for example, a family of four in a housing estate will pay 3612 crowns a year according to the proposal. The party also criticized the fact that the managing councilor Petr Hlubuček (STAN) did not inform the public about certain adjustments. “It is completely unfair to the people of Prague to know such a dramatic price increase 15 days before the end of the year. If Mr. Hlubuček meant it as a Christmas present, we thank him very much, “said Alexandra Udženija (ODS), chairwoman of the council control committee.
According to the chairman of the club of ODS representatives Zdeněk Zajíček, the argument regarding biowaste containers is also odd. According to him, it is unrealistic for brown containers with sufficient capacity and collection frequency to be added to each large one so that the share of 30 to 40 percent of biowaste mentioned in the proposal can be thrown into them. “Because the brown bin will be permanently overcrowded, citizens will have no choice but to throw biowaste in a large container as before, and this will not save any money or the environment,” he said.
