Minsk, Warsaw – There are thousands of migrants and refugees on the border between Belarus and Poland. Available information indicates that nighttime temperatures on the spot have dropped below freezing and water and food.
The Archdiocesan Charity Prague is in daily contact with its partners in Belarus, which are the National Charity of Belarus, the Diocesan Charity of Vitebsk and the Diocesan Charity of Grodno. He also consults the situation with the Czech Ambassador to Minsk Tomáš Pernický.
According to Andrei Aniskievich, director of Caritas Belarus, a meeting of the Belarusian Episcopal Conference, held on Friday, November 12, addressed the issue of migrants. Bishops in Belarus have announced a fundraiser to help people at risk at the border. At the same time, they asked the local National Charity for coordination and effective assistance in these critical border areas.
The Archdiocesan Charity Prague would like to join this help. Following an agreement with the Belarusian partners, it is now being negotiated whether any funds sent from the Czech Republic to Belarus will be released for this assistance. Authorities in Belarus routinely review funds sent from the Czech Republic for aid projects for several months before they can be released.
Therefore, at the moment, Caritas does not announce a fundraiser, but those who would like to support their Belarusian partners in helping the poor and migrants can contribute to a special fundraiser of the Archdiocesan Charity for Belarus, No. 749994/5500, VS 20 500.
According to the Charity, they are heading for a humanitarian catastrophe that will affect thousands of people, including pregnant women and children. They take place at a time when the church commemorates World Poor’s Day. It is proclaimed on Sunday, November 19, and Pope Francis related in this context: “Poverty is not an abstract idea and the poor are not the product of fantasy, its massive presence requires society, on the contrary, a solution resulting from creative planning.”
The Archdiocesan Charity Prague has been helping Belarus for 17 years. It implements projects to help poor people, families with children in need, seniors and other disadvantaged people. It currently helps 500 families, people affected by the covid-19 pandemic, seniors of the Home in Kryčevo and others. He helps everything thanks to donors who financially support the Archdiocesan Charity in these projects.
