One year late, the new rector of the Pontifical Institute Santa Maria dell’Anima introduced in Rome, Michael Max (51), priest of the Archdiocese of Salzburg, was officially celebrated in his office on Sunday.
“Today our task is perhaps more than ever to seize the chance in our small area to give Europe a soul – an ‘anima'”, said Max of the Kathpress agency on Sunday in Rome.
In fact, the priest of the Archdiocese of Salzburg had already been in office since September 2020 as head of the German-speaking parish in Rome and the priestly college of the “Anima”. At that time, however, the celebration could not take place due to the pandemic restrictions.
Archbishop Lackner also at the festive service
The chairman of the Austrian Bishops ‘Conference and Salzburg Archbishop Franz Lackner, the German Archbishop Ludwig Schick from Bamberg and the Swiss Bishops’ Conference chairman Felix Gmür traveled to Rome for the festive divine service on Sunday morning. Schick and Gmür have been associated with the “Anima” for many years as former members of the local priests’ college.
In his sermon, Archbishop Schick recalled his own student days in Rome: “Here I experienced the universal Church. That was valuable and indispensable in my priestly and pastoral care. ”Anima means soul and in the Christian tradition the“ soul ”has an important meaning. In colloquial language, for example, the “good soul” is still used today, which ensures a good mood, a good spirit, a sense of community and the common good. First and foremost, the rector himself should be the good soul in the “anima”.
Second Salzburg priest at the helm of the “Anima”
The Pontifical Institute Santa Maria dell’Anima takes care of the German-speaking parish and pilgrim pastoral care in Rome as well as the management of a priestly college. Here about 20 priests from the German-speaking area or the countries of the former Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation.
After Prelate Franz Wasner (1967-1981), Michael Max is the second Salzburg priest to head the “Anima”. He only heads the institute until 2026. Before moving to Rome, he was rector of the St. Virgil Education Center and, among other things, chairman of the Ecumenical Commission of the Archdiocese of Salzburg. In 2020 he succeeded the previous rector Franz Xaver Brandmayr in the “Anima”.
