It was celebrated at the Prague Zoo. Richard is thirty, Kawi’s first birthday
“Both are among our favorite animal personalities, and because we wanted to meet their fans, we prepared birthday parties for one day,” Miroslav Bobek Prague Zoo.
“Richard, in his thirties, is a great leading male of the Prague gorilla family and a multiple father. At one time, he became the winner of a slightly different reality show, Revelation, and we named after him the prizes that Prague Zoo awards every year. And Kawi, a male male orangutan, is simply our ‘velvet’ cub: he was born last November 17th. “
Both Sumatran orangutans and a group of lowland gorillas received a birthday surprise from breeders. Throughout the day, visitors will also find a lot of interesting information about the life of the people at the Prague Zoo and about gorillas in Africa and orangutans in Sumatra.
You could get acquainted with the protection of lowland gorillas in Cameroon, Africa, and the Wandering Bus project, which Prague Zoo is organizing gorillas in their homeland. In the end, the winners of the art competition for the best portraits of both celebrants were also announced.
Richard is a deserving father
The male lowland gorilla Richard was born on November 9, 1991 in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. He arrived in Prague in November 2003 to become the new leading male gorilla group. In the course of thirteen years, he became the father of six descendants.
The most famous of these was the female Moja, the first historical lowland gorilla cub born in a Czech zoo, who was born in 2004 and now lives in the Cabárceno Natural Park in Spain. Three of his descendants live with Richard in the Prague gorilla group – Kiburi (born in 2010), Nuru (born in 2012) and Ajabu, born in 2016. In addition to Richard and his descendants, the group also includes females – Kamba, Kijivu and Shinda.
Kawi is a velvet cub
The young Sumatran orangutan Pustakawan, abbreviated Kawi, celebrates its first birthday on November 17. For Mawar, Kawi is already the fourth offspring, for Pagy only the first. Kawi is the first grandson of the famous male Kama (1971-2013).
He was also born in Prague, to parents who still came from the wild. Although Kama was raised by an artist – Mrs. Gottfried’s breeder even drove him in a pram – he had two sons: Filip, who lives in Bratislava, and Pagy. So Kawi is the only right way for orangutans to come to the zoo from the forests of Sumatra, and they are therefore genetically extremely valuable. He lives in the Prague Zoo together with his mother, father and sister Diri.
