Innsbruck – Dangerous corona situation, German travel warning, general uncertainty: These are (again) difficult times for gastronomy, tourism and trade. All those involved interpreted the official commissioning of the new Christmas and winter lighting in Innsbruck’s inner and old town yesterday evening as a sign of confidence.
Michael Perger, chairman of the Innsbruck Center Association, could announce representatives from the city, the state, the tourism association and the Chamber of Commerce (as the largest financing partner). City Councilor Christine Oppitz-Plörer, who symbolically set the glowing “Innsbruck” logo in motion at Adolf-Pichler-Platz at the push of a button, spoke of “new light” for the city, which should give people hope, and dedicated it to the employees in the hospitals, “which accomplish the unimaginable”. She also issued a clear appeal for vaccinations, as did LR Toni Mattle, who called vaccination a “sign of solidarity”.

When the Christmas lights come on, you will notice “a new mood and new impetus” in retail, too, positive TVB chairman Karl Gostner, himself a trader in the old town. According to Klaus Mark from MK Illumination, 3.5 km of streets and various squares will be provided with a total of lighting. There are several hundred motifs distributed over the city (including “Tyrolean” from edelweiss to deer) and a total of around 500,000 LED light points.
Perger puts the total investment with the support of all partners at approx. 490,000 euros. Vice-BM Hannes Anzengruber remembers that it was “politically a rocky road” until the city took part. (md)
