Mitsotakis: To return the sculptures of the Parthenon to Greece
The return of sculptures of the Parthenon in Greece asked Kyriakos Mitsotakis speaking at a special event to celebrate the 75th anniversary of its founding UNESCO. According to the Greek Prime Minister, the marbles of the Parthenon are probably the most symbolic link between modern Greece and Ancient Greece, and while most of the pieces are in the Acropolis Museum, a few meters away from the Monument, another part of the exhibition remains in London.
“I believe that the Parthenon Sculptures located in London are necessary to be reunited with most of the collection of Parthenon Sculptures located in Athens”, the Prime Minister pointed out meaningfully and called Great Britain to sit at the table of dialogue with the Greek government.
After all, according to the Prime Minister, “this year marks the 200th anniversary of the beginning of the Struggle for the Independence of Greece. “There could not have been a better time than this for the return of the missing section and the reunification of the Parthenon Sculptures, in their birthplace, Greece.”
Recall that about a month ago during the 22nd Session of the Intergovernmental Commission of Unesco for the first time in addition to the recommendation, which it consistently adopts on the subject – even referring to the poor conditions of the exhibition of Sculptures in the British Museum – A unanimously voted additional text which is a decision (Decision 22 COM 17) solely aimed at the issue of their return Sculptures of the Parthenon.
