City of Antwerp restores Fort Lillo according to historical plan from 1815: “Valuable trees will be preserved” | Antwerp
AntwerpFort Lillo is a remnant of the former polder villages on the Right Bank of the Scheldt. The reconstruction past in the Masterplan Lillo. With this plan, the city wants to improve the landscape, the experience and the cultural history of the fort for residents and visitors. The works will start in mid 2022.
The historic outer wall between the fort and the Scheldelaan will be reconstructed and will once again be given a bifurcated access road. A new bridge over the ring canal for the access road with it. The bridge will be built according to the historical model. Where possible, the later bastions will be restored according to the historic plan from 1815. “The valuable trees will be preserved. In the south, on the site of the current marina, two new bastions with new trees will be built”, the city said.
The park zone on the west side of the fort is also being redeveloped according to the historical model. Ten trenches will start the city so that they can eventually restore the early bridges between the outer and inner walls. In a first phase, the existing dikes and roads will be constructed and separation works within the system will be constructed. These works will start in mid 2022.
Second phase
In a second phase, among other things, the reconstruction of the fort will take place. In addition, the dike around Lillo will be renewed and raised by 3 meters to protect Lillo and the harbor against storm tides on the Scheldt. These works fit in with the Sigma Plan, which should better protect Flanders against flooding of the Scheldt and its rivers. The current marina, with space for 10 boats in the water and 20 on dry land, will be moved towards the Scheldt. The towpath on the new dike leads visitors to the new marina. A new bicycle connection will be built between the cycle path on the Scheldelaan and the DeWaterbus landing stage.
Along the Scheldelaan, outside the village, there will be a visitor’s car park for 10 buses, 118 cars and about 100 bicycles. Residents can park in the parking lot in the village. The concept for phase 2 will be developed into a final design in 2022. After a spatial implementation plan has been drawn up, the result of an environmental permit and the appointment of a contractor, the works can start in 2024.
