Brno – Bicycle transport disappears from the zoning plan
Last week, the Brno City Hall published a modified draft zoning plan. One of the new changes is the deletion of the definition of self-managed cycle paths, which were to create a backbone network for bicycle transport. According to NESEHNUTÍ, this regulation significantly reduces the chance for the effective development of an opinion in the territory of Brno, about which the organizations have been cooperating with representatives of the municipality for a long time.
The Department of Transport of the Regional Office of the South Moravian Region drew attention to partial irregularities in the solution of bicycle transport in the previously amended draft plan. The drafter of the zoning plan resolved his comments by deleting separate cycle paths from the document. ,,With the removal of this part of the plan, the chances of the creation of safe corridors for bicycle transport and the conceptual development of the Brno network of cycle paths and cycle routes are disappearing. The concept built only on bike paths, which can be just directional markings, how to get from one place to another by bike is a really sad result. While European cities are massively building high-quality cycle paths, Brno’s cycling infrastructure, which is already far behind them, has little hope of development. “ comments on the change Martin Hyťha from NESEHNUTÍ.
While the definition supporting the safe movement of cyclists around Brno disappears from the zoning plan, Deputy Mayor Petr Hladík on social networks [1] writes that transport in Brno must be safe in the first place, even for cyclists. Barbora Kosinová, the coordinator of the SUSTAINABLE Brno campaign, is responding to this. ,,At the same time, the new zoning plan probably does not give cyclists a better chance than, as before, they will zigzag between the cars and use narrow cycle lanes, which many drivers do not respect. ”
The cyclists themselves do not agree with the modification of the Brno zoning plan. ,,More than half of people would use a bicycle for their rides if they could avoid fast-moving cars as much as possible. In addition to safe traffic and, as a result, often roads, there are separate cycle paths. But city officials are constantly proving that it serves primarily the automotive minority. “ says Jakub Kriš, a member of the Brno Cycling Association.
The current Brno zoning plan was to expire at the end of next year. However, due to this year’s changes in the Building Act, it is being extended until 2028. “The proposal for a new Brno zoning plan is still unfinished in many respects. Apart from cyclists, it does not take into account, for example, the climate crisis. Neither other representatives of the public nor some representatives of the city districts are satisfied with it. City Hall has a chance to plan to improve in many ways, thanks to a change in the building code, and should consider whether it still wants to push for its completion by December next year. ” adds Kosinová.
DO NOT MOVE as part of your campaign SUSTAINABLE Brno has been involved in the process of creating a new Brno zoning plan for a long time. In addition to the efforts to introduce meaningful and conceptual cycling measures, for example, the new city plan should take into account climate change and listen to the voice of the Brno public.
