On this November 9, 2021, Berlin celebrates the 32e anniversary of the fall of the wall which split its territory in two. To mark the occasion, the artist from Toulouse James colomina settled in the German capital, two of his sculptures …
Mandy, a name for history
The people of Toulouse had been able to see red silhouettes, created by James Colomina, near the Jeanne d’Arc metro station or in the Jolimont district. But for a few hours, they crossed the Rhine.
The artist from Toulouse took advantage of the 32e anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall for present your work in Germany. Two sculptures have been installed in the city since Monday, November 8.
I started with “Mandy”, this little seven-year-old girl who symbolically walks over the wall with her teddy bear, the most important one she can bring back with her. Then, on a pylon of a U1 metro line bridge, I installed “the child in the mask”, which refers to our contemporary society which can be oppressive.
The choice of the first name, for the first sculpture, is not trivial: ” it is the first name most used in East Germany before the fall of the Wall. I try to project myself on that period ”.
“Lots of interaction”
James Colomina appreciates the reaction of Berliners. “There are a lot of people passing by, looking at the sculptures, taking pictures of themselves in front of… There is a lot of interaction with Mandy“.
It’s always good when you can express yourself with works. We want to reach as many people as possible. Berlin is a city steeped in history, between World War II and the wall that divided the city. Berliners are receptive to my works!
Pendant The Toulouse artist stays in the German capital a little less than a week.
