There is a shortage of wine around the world – but Portugal is resisting the crisis
The alert is caused by the International Organization of Vine and Wine. Considers that bad weather has damaged several productions.
In 2021, wine production levels around the world are the lowest in years. The alert was informed this week by the International Organization of Vine and Wine (OVI). At issue are the climatic phenomena that have affected most of the productions with a worldwide impact, such as France, Spain and Italy.
The organization expects the production volume to fall between the 247.1 and 253.5 million hectoliters (mhl), with an average of 250.3 mhl. One hectoliter corresponds to 133 bottles of 75 centiliters. The value is below average for the third consecutive year and returns to 2017 values, with 248 mhl, the lowest in recent decades.
France, Spain and Italy are the most affected countries. “Together they lost about 22 mhl compared to 2020 due to late spring frosts and generally unfavorable conditions,” explained OVI to the agency Reuters.
In Europe, there are only four countries that will surpass the 2020 values. They are: Portugal, Germany, Romania and Hungary. Also South America, South Africa and Australia will manage to present favorable volumes as far as wine production is concerned.
Still, the organization predicts that the positive values of some countries are not enough to offset the demand around the world, which has been increasing since the second half of the year.
