Massive demonstration for climate change in Glasgow
Tens of thousands of people braved the rain in Glasgow on Saturday to demonstrate demanding more tackling climate change.
Bad weather with rainy clouds did not seem to scare people away from the protest action. According to the organizers, up to 100,000 people took part in the demonstration train, which went through the streets of the Scottish town.
Security around the conference hall where the COP26 climate summit is being held has been strengthened ahead of the many demonstrations held in connection with the summit.
On Saturday, several police helicopters swarmed over the motley crowd in Glasgow where everything from pensioners to disguised members of the Extinction Rebellion took part in the protests.
Climate activist Greta Thunberg was scheduled to hold an appeal on Saturday, but she canceled it because, according to Sky News, she would rather give the floor to indigenous peoples and minority voices. Thunberg spoke at Friday’s demonstration in Glasgow where she called the COP26 climate summit a failure.
Worldwide, there were over 200 different events and demonstrators in more than 100 countries on Saturday, including Denmark, Kenya, Turkey, France, Brazil, Australia, South Korea and Canada.
In Copenhagen, up to 10,000 people took part in a climate demonstration, while almost 40,000 demonstrated in Amsterdam.
At the Glasgow climate summit, almost 200 countries are participating in the negotiations on how it should be possible to achieve the Paris Agreement’s goal of a maximum of 1.5 or 2 degrees global warming. The summit lasts until 12 November.
