Berlin (AP) – Thuringia’s Prime Minister Bodo Ramelow will give his inaugural speech as President of the Federal Council today (9:30 a.m.) in Berlin. The left-wing politician has held office for one year since November 1st. He has already stated that he explains this time to “growing together in society”.
In an interview with the “Thüringer Allgemeine”, Ramelow spoke out against an Eastern quota for the occupation of government offices, but called for a strong position for the Federal Government’s Eastern Commissioner. If you are serious, you have to settle this position in the Chancellery and give it a right of veto, he said.
As President of the Federal Council, Ramelow holds one of the highest state offices in Germany. Before him, it was held by Saxony-Anhalt’s Prime Minister Reiner Haseloff (CDU). Haseloff is now the first Vice-President of the Federal Council, Hamburg’s Mayor Peter Tschentscher (SPD) is the second Vice-President. The Federal Council represents the federal states in the legislative process.
