Zakharova: Russia is against the erosion of the basic parameters of the Western Sahara settlement – Politics
MOSCOW, November 3. / TASS /. Russia opposes a departure from an impartial position on the Western Sahara settlement and therefore refused to support the draft Security Council resolution on the extension of the mandate of the UN Mission for the referendum in the Sahara until October 31, 2022. This was stated on Wednesday at a briefing by Maria Zakharova, Director of the Information and Press Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation.
“Unfortunately, once again, the draft includes language that means a departure from an impartial and unbiased position on the Western Sahara agreement on the part of the UN Security Council,” she noted. Third-party decisions providing for the use of the self-determination mechanism in accordance with the provisions of the UN Charter.
The official representative of the diplomatic service expressed regret that the Russian “remarks and proposals of a compromise nature were ignored.” According to her, in addition to the Russian Federation, Tunisia also abstained from voting on the draft resolution, the resolution adopted as a result was adopted and the mandate was extended.
“At the same time, we reaffirm our support for the UN mission to hold a referendum in the Sahara, which plays a strengthening role in the region,” Zahala said.
