From November 8 to December 17, 1.6 thousand senior students of the medical and pediatric faculty of the Moscow State Medical University named after Sechenov will be sent for “practical training” to Moscow polyclinics. This was reported by “Kommersant” to the press service of the university.
They stressed that this solution is in line with the curriculum. In addition, during the practice, students receive theoretical materials in a distance format.
Ivan Davydov, a member of the Action Medical Workers’ Union, recalled that at about the same time of the year ago, Sechenov University students were also removed from classes and sent to work to help doctors in clinics and red charts. In his opinion, “coronavirus practice” does not provide students with the experience they need. For example, if they have to have obstetric practice, then work in a polyclinic will not replace it. Davydov believes that such a practice will temporarily “fill the clinics with free labor”, but “for the competence of the future doctor, it is more likely harmful.”
The press service of the Pirogov Russian National Research Medical University told the publication that they did not send students to practice, but they allowed them to work in the capital’s medical institutions during the coronavirus pandemic. University that we are talking about official employment, not related to the educational process.
The publication notes that the experience of combining the educational practice of students of medical universities with the help of doctors in a pandemic already exists in the regions. Khakass State University (KSU) named after Katanov to attract more than 200 students as volunteers. Sixth-year students of the medical-prophylactic and pediatric faculties of the Ural State Medical University will undergo practical training in primary care medical institutions. They will visit patients at home, as well as help in medical institutions.
Last fall, Deputy Prime Minister Tatyana Golikova instructed the Ministry of Education and Science to attract senior students of medical universities to work with patients with COVID-19. According to her, at that time more than 24 thousand university students and about 500 teachers were involved in the fight against coronavirus.
The Ministry of Health resorted to similar measures at the beginning of the pandemic. At the same time, applicants who are directly involved in the fight against coronavirus infection were provided with benefits to facilitate admission to residency programs at medical universities.
