Especially at this time of year, when it gets darker much earlier and the visibility is even worse in dry weather, cyclists, skaters, scooters, but also pedestrians are at greater risk of collision with motor vehicle drivers, which can have fatal consequences. That is why it is especially important to have the right lighting and reflective elements.
“With the onset of the colder months, the days are also getting shorter and every reflective element reduces the risk that the driver will overlook the cyclist and have an accident. It is important that people on bikes think about this, but we must also not forget the mutual consideration of cyclists and drivers. We want to advise cyclists on how to improve safety, and colleagues from the city police will also help, who will check the bike’s equipment and possibly explain what is missing and why it is important, “said the deputy mayor of the capital. m Prague Adam Scheinherr.
These days, the police officers, as part of the traditional Don’t Be Like a Bat event, which is being organized for the sixth time by the City Hall. m of Prague and City of Prague, will help check the equipment of the bike and advise what is missing and why it is important. Inspections are produced from November 1, 2021 to half past one in the early evening and evening, directly on the trails and in the streets of Prague.
Last year did not take place due to the epidemic situation. However, the capital records an increase in cyclists in the streets of Prague every year. It is all the more important to pay attention to the prevention and increase of the safety of cyclists moving around the city, especially with reduced visibility.
“In the annual repetition of this preventive action, the police officers themselves see a huge shift for the better. From year to year, they distribute more preventive with a cycling theme, which is a reward for those cyclists who are aware of how important it is for them to be seen in road traffic. More gifts equals less talk, and we are very happy about that, “said Eduard Šuster, director of the Prague City Police.
In previous years, most cyclists had their machine lighting in good condition during inspections. Fines were imposed in only a few cases, but they were rather symbolic amounts. The perpetrators, on the other hand, received a gift in the missing lights and reflective elements.
It is important to know that each bike must be equipped with reflectors, which are mandatory equipment, but can also be replaced by reflective elements on clothing. There must be a red reflector at the rear, white at the front and orange reflectors at the pedals. In addition, the orange reflectors must be in the wires of the front or rear or both wheels, or they may be replaced by reflective materials, for example on the sidewalls of the tires. And with reduced visibility, the cyclist is obliged to have the front white light on and the red light at the back, which may be intermittent.
