G. Nausėda to Lithuanians in the United Kingdom: each of you is very much needed by Lithuania
President Gitan Nauseda, on a working visit to the United Kingdom attending the 26th United Nations Climate Change Summit (COP26) in Glasgow, began his engagement with the Lithuanian community in the United Kingdom (UK).
According to the report of the Presidency, the President discussed with Lithuanian Lithuanians the topical issues of Lithuania’s domestic and foreign policy, security and climate change challenges, issues of citizenship preservation and Lithuanian education.
The President of the United Kingdom called on Lithuanians in the UK to nurture Lithuanianness and not lose touch with Lithuania, wherever they live.
“Each of you is very necessary for Lithuania. I invite you to actively work as Lithuanian creators: create a business, invest, share scientific and professional achievements. At the same time, we strive for Lithuania to be a successful, modern state, so that it is safe and convenient to create its own future for everyone, ”said the manager.
The President was pleased that Lithuanian schools in the United Kingdom are strong and have become important in the Lithuanian center. According to the head of the country, by ensuring that children can learn to speak Lithuanian, grow by acknowledging their roots, Lithuanians living in any country lay their main futures.
The head of state discussed the issue of preserving citizenship with representatives of the UK community. The President stressed the importance of starting preparations for the referendum planned for 2024 now.
“We must work more actively both in Lithuania and more actively to promote our civic activism,” the President said, calling on Lithuanians in the UK to become more involved in spreading the word about the forthcoming referendum and encouraging active participation by family and friends in both the UK and Lithuania.
There are currently around 200,000 people living in the UK. Lithuanian, there are more than 60 Lithuanian organizations of various profiles, Lithuanian education is provided by 40 Lithuanian educational institutions.
At the meeting, the leaders and members of Lithuanian organizations in the United Kingdom, representing almost all twenty organizations, club associations and Lithuanian schools.
