The breaking news from then: read our special about the history of Amsterdam
This Sunday, Het Parool will publish a special digital edition for subscribers: the breaking news of the past, a guide for today. Read the edition here.
October is History Month, the largest historical event in the Netherlands. However, you could say that every month is that of the past.
That became clear during the lockdown. Kept at home, and with working from home as the new normal, we went through new blocks again. The questions naturally arise: Why is this house here? What is the story behind our street? And who ever lived in this neighborhood? In this way – in the midst of all the silence – we even came into direct contact with the city’s past.
Now that the world is less locked up, these walks and musings are a thing of the past. But the history remains – and forms the story of Amsterdam every day.
With these questions in mind, we have prepared a digital edition in which you will find everything about striking Amsterdammers and special radical city plans, about sports heroes and the dark pages of our past. They are approximately, moving and detailed stories that take you right through the city – and time.
We also offer a look at the breaking news from then: what topics dominated the headlines in the past? And how is The watchword originate?
I hope you enjoy reading it and I encourage you to take that block again. You already have the roadmap in your hands.
Sander van der Horst, compiler of this edition.
PS: do you miss attention to the colonial past of the city? There will be a special digital edition about this in February next year.
