Rector’s elections on Prague and Brno technology
Several autumn rector’s elections are taking place at Czech universities this autumn. During the last week, the current rector Vojtěch Petráček defended his position in the leadership of the Czech Technical University in Prague. The new rector of Brno University of Technology will be the current Quaestor Ladislav Janíček.
In the autumn of 2021, there are several regular candidates for the position of rector at Czech universities. In October this year, for example, the management of the Czech University of Agriculture in Prague was defended by the current rector Petr Sklenička, and Miroslav Brzezina will continue to head the Technical University in Liberec after the election. Alois Nečas, the old-new rector of the Veterinary University of Brno, also defended his position. Last week, Milena Králíčková was elected the new candidate for rector of Charles University. She will become the first woman in the history of the school to head the oldest Czech university. The same candidate for rector was elected at the same week at Mendel University in Brno. After his appointment as president, he will be Vojtěch Adam.
Ladislav Janíček will lead the Brno technique
On Tuesday, October 26, 2021, the Academic Senate of the Brno University of Technology elected a candidate for the position of Rector. He became the winner in the first round the current Quaestor university Ladislav Janíček. She voted for him in the election 24 out of a total of 27 academic senators. Another candidate in the election was Pavel Zemčík, who works as the dean of the local Faculty of Information Technology. After his appointment as President of the Republic, Janíček will take office from February 2022 to January 2026. He will replace the current Rector Petr Štěpánek.
Janíček graduated from Brno University of Technology and Nottingham Trent University. They joined the Aviation Institute of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at BUT, where he has been working for over thirty years. He also lectures at the Faculty of Economics and Administration of Masaryk University. In the past, he worked at Masaryk University as a quaestor and also as a vice-rector. He currently holds the position of Quaestor at Brno University of Technology. Among the priorities of his election program are, for example, the improvement of teaching at the university, especially in the field of internationalization and the development of joint degree and double degree programs in cooperation with foreign partners. “Technical education should, in my opinion, become a societal priority. I see the field of education as the primary mission of the university, “ Ladislav Janíček said in a speech at the pre-election meeting.
According to him, the emphasis on the applied dimension of teaching is also crucial. “I would like to advocate for a higher number of professional programs. I believe that studying at BUT offers students a competitive advantage, “ explained the new candidate for rector. In his work at the head of the largest Czech technology, he also wants to support the publication performance of scientists, support the transfer of technology and support the representation of BUT in key organizations.
The plans of the new candidate for rector thus largely correlate with the new long-term strategy that the school adopted this spring. According to a new one called VIZE 2030, the school wants to become at least the world’s technical university over the next ten years, which will be a major success in terms of the competitiveness of graduates, international rankings and the number of international students. The school also aims to build a scientific environment in its laboratories in which local educators and researchers will have the opportunity to actively influence technological progress.
The current Rector of CTU Petráček defended his position
On Wednesday, October 27, 2021, the Academic Senate of the Czech Technical University in Prague elected Vojtěch Petráček as its rector for rector. The CTU in Prague next door for the last four years and after his appointment as president, it will be his second term at the head of Prague technology. He was nominated as the only candidate in the election and won the vote 30 votes out of 36 academic senators present. The CTU Academic Senate consists of 45 members. After his appointment as President of the Republic, Petráček’s further tenure at the head of the university will last until 2026.
Vojtěch Petráček graduated from the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics of Charles University in the field of physical electronics and optoelectronics. But he also worked at the Institute of Physics of the University of Heidelberg. He has been working at the Czech Technical University in Prague since 2004, where he subsequently obtained a professorship at the Faculty of Nuclear and Physical Engineering in 2007. His main professional interests are the physics of ultra-relativistic nuclear collisions and particle physics. Between 2010 and 2015, he was also Vice-Rector for Science and Research at the University.
“The vision of CTU development that I present is based on the results achieved during my first term of office,” writes Petráček in his election program. “Undoubtedly, the main pillars we have built together include the strategic plan, the general, the institutional accreditation, the accreditation rules, the wage regulation, the career rules and the financing methodology.” lists some achievements.
“We established our subsidiary for technology transfer ČVUT Tech sro and together with Charles University and the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic the association PRG.AI with the aim of transforming Prague into a European center of artificial intelligence. We graduated with an excellent evaluation of the international evaluation process and ranked the university among the six excellent A universities in the Czech Republic. He gained a strong position and reputation at CTU not only thanks to his professional activities, but also for his commitment in the fight against the COVID pandemic, “ Petráček recalled some of the other successes and new projects that the university managed to start during his tenure.
The objectives of his next term include, for example building a fully international bilingual environment at the university, achieving a quantifiable shift in international rankings, ensuring further research infrastructure activities, including their completion. In the context of the third role of universities, it wants to focus mainly on the emergence of an integrated academic force created in cooperation with most universities – then members of the Association of Research Universities. The plan also aims to introduce a system of “micro-credentials” as a retraining system offered by the university as part of lifelong learning.
