This is a world first and it is in Toulouse and Occitanie that it is happening. Beginning of October, the Cnes (National Center for Space Studies) and Nubbo, the start-up accelerator in Occitania, presented the first global start-up incubator whose economic vocation is entirely dedicated to the Moon. Son’s name: TechTheMoon.
Make projects emerge
Following a selection process, five start-ups were chosen to join TechTheMoon’s first class, hosted in the heart of the city, in Montaudran. “With a view to the first human missions to the Moon scheduled for 2024 and a sustainable presence in autonomy from 2030, we aim to bring about projects that respond to issues of infrastructure, resources and life support” , calling together the Cnes and Nubbo.
An inflatable moon habitat
The first nugget is called Spartan race. It is developing space habitats suitable for exploring the Moon, but also for the underwater environment and, in the future, for the planet Mars. “EuroHab / ILOT” is its name, is an inflatable lunar habitat that can move on the surface of the Moon. The promoters of this project are currently in Dubai for the Universal Exhibition. The exploration company, she wishes “to democratize access to the Moon for space and non-space industries thanks to reusable space vehicles”. For his part, Orius Technologies focused on the production of plants in a space environment. The challenge: “Putting plant production at the heart of future lunar bases”.
Measure antenna performance
Two other nuggets have been integrated into TechTheMoon: Any fieldFieldisplay, a tool for visualizing “electromagnetic radiation and measuring the performance of antennas” in order to make a rapid and precise diagnosis on the spot. At last, Metis prose “a new concept of technical imaging instrumentation”. The start-up targets three areas of application: the analysis and traceability of works of art, the analysis of space components and equipment and the location of radioactive materials for the dismantling of nuclear installations or mining ”.
The criteria selected
These start-ups must meet several criteria such as “validation of the minimum viable product for the Moon achievable within 12 months”, “an assumption of a viable terrestrial business model at 12 months” and “full-time availability of the project leader. principal ”as well as its installation in Occitanie.
TechTheMoon is set to evolve and could welcome new start-ups in 2022.
