Francesco Vezzoli in Florence
Francesco Vezzoli’s art is not new to the city of Florence. Already in 2014, the Italian artist had exhibited his works as part of the exhibition Vezzoli Spring-Summer, on the occasion of the special project of the Pitti Discovery Foundation curated by Francesco Bonami. Today, the artist returns for the second time to the Renaissance city par excellence to enrich, with a touch of imaginative contemporaneity, the symbolic places of Florence. The sculpture in Piazza della Signoria has a meaning particular. It is called Compassion and depicting a monumental lion in the nineteenth century style. Installed on an ancient base, it crushes a Roman head from the 2nd century AD between its jaws The second work is baptized The muse of archeology weeps (2021). It is located inside Palazzo Vecchio, in the Studiolo of Francesco I de ‘Medici – an amazing place, full of iconographic, esoteric and astrological suggestions, built between 1569 and 1573 -, which for the first time ever houses a contemporary artwork. Here, a body dressed in a Roman toga ends with a bronze head. And the quote is clear: here is the reference to The Archaeologists by De Chirico, one of the works that best represents the recovery of classicism in the modern era.
Francesco Vezzoli works
With these two works Vezzoli extends his hand to De Chirico and Savinio, creating a collage stylistic and linguistic made of mysterious and metaphysical notes. The artistic narrative is surreal: it ranges from archeology to fantasy, memory and invention, and classicism becomes an immutable and timeless memory. Contemporary art dialogues with an authorial past, which Vezzoli neither denies nor cancels, but, on the contrary, enriches by transmitting a mysterious, poetic and transcendental power.
