Monaco lose in extra time against Barcelona
Under the eyes of Prince Albert, Monaco stood up to a European cador who lost only in extra time against a Barcelona formation which was very impressive defensively and better than its opponent in the free throw sector (70% at 14/20 for Monaco, against 81.3% at 14/16 for Barcelona).
“It’s the story of a rebound, a stop … But I’m very happy with the way we played against one of the best teams in Europe,” said at the end of the meeting of Monegasque coach Zvevdan Mitrovic.
“We want to continue to show character, to fight and to be at the level in every game in this competition,” he continued.
After a balanced start to the match, the Monegasques also ended the first quarter with a bang. Through Will Thomas (7 consecutive points) and Donta Hall, on a superb pass from Mike James, they posted a 9-0 to the Catalans to score at +10 (22-12).
Better in the racket under the impetus of the former Monegasque scorer Brando Davis (best of the meeting with 27 points) and Nikola Mitrovic (14 points), the Barcelonans quickly reacted and gradually glued to the score (32-31, 19th). But it was without counting on James and his long-distance three-point shot, which allowed the Roca Team to regain a little lead at the break (35-31).
“Very difficult to win here”
Returning from the locker room, Mitrovic’s men showed a slightly less effective defensive quality. Opposite, Barcelona did not let go. And as this formation has sacred three-point shooters, it went ahead.
The excellent Davis equalized (48-48 28th), as did Nigel Hayes (51-51, 29th). Then, Rolands Smits, still three points (52-54, 30th), allowed his team to lead for the first time.
However, the players of Sarunas Jasikevicius did not have a winning game. James rekindled the light and gave hope to his family (65-64, 37th).
But with Davis and too many free throws missed by his opponent, Barcelona obtained an extension (75-75), during which Barça spoke about his experience.
“It’s very good to play eye to eye with the best in Europe,” railed Monegasque captain Leo Westermann. But we end the week with two defeats (Madrid and editor’s note). We aim better. Having said that, I hope we will use this match as a basis ”.
“We are very satisfied with this victory, a blast for the Barcelona coach Jasikevicius. Monaco has built a great team. It will be very difficult to win here. “
Monaco will travel, Friday, October 22, to Vitoria (Spain) for the 5th day of the competition.
