The search for a higher quality of life for yourself and your family, the desire to take on a new professional challenge, are manifold. But which cities are the best places to live and work?
This question was sent to the German financial services platform Loanlink24. She examined 70 emigrant destinations for earnings, cost of living, hospitality, quality of life, and remote work, among other things, and created a ranking based on this: the Expat City Index 2021.
Switzerland made it to the podium: Zurich (12th place) and Bern did not take third place. “A high quality of life, a high level of internal security and very good earning opportunities make Bern extremely attractive for immigrants,” Loanlink24 writes in its press release. Since the last index in 2019, Bern has improved by three places.
Busbille are the most expensive in Bern
Like Luxembourg (2nd place), Bern is also expensive, Loanlink24 continues to write. A family has to raise around 6020 euros a month to maintain their standard of living. “Expats also have to invest a little more for a permanent home.” A property in Bern costs an average of nine annual salaries. Also noteworthy: At around 3.90 euros, a ticket for local transport in Bern is the most expensive in the world (according to the ranking, it is also more expensive than in Zurich).
As in 2019, Ottawa took the top spot in the city ranking. Low cost of living, an average of 37 hours a week with full employment and attractive environmental conditions would make Ottawa “extremely livable”, according to the portal.
