The Art Nouveau house by Josef Piskač on the Edvard Beneš embankment in Prague will be renovated
A costly reconstruction awaits the empty and dilapidated building opposite Straka’s Academy, where the government office is located. By 2028, this historic and rare building would have a new coat and use. The Ministry of Finance should reconstruct for about one billion crowns. Work could start in 2024.
The listed building was built in 1909 by the architect Josef Piskač. The building is part of the Klára Institute for the Blind. In the past, the house served, for example, as the House of Body Culture, or as the seat of the District Public Prosecutor’s Office for Prague 1 and Prague 7. After reconstruction, the building should serve government officials and for representational purposes.
The complex is currently managed by the Office for Representation of the State in Property Matters. Private ownership is not possible here for security reasons. Directly opposite the house is the prime minister’s entrance to the Straka Academy building and the main entrance to the building is entered by all the ministers of the Czech government. If the building were in the hands of a private owner, it would become safely uncontrollable.
According to current plans, employees of the Human Rights Section, the Government Legislative Council Section, the European Communications Department, the facility administrator and ICT could find a place in the building. A representative space for business meetings or press conferences should then be created in the reconstructed Art Nouveau hall.
