Tram lines 7 and 15 briefly disrupted by collision with catenary pole on Grotesteenweg | Antwerp
AntwerpOn the Grotesteenweg, a motorist hit the pole of the high-voltage line for the trams on Wednesday morning. This caused problems with tram traffic on lines 7 and 15. The repairs took about 2 hours and in the meantime they were used to accommodate the passengers.
If you were wondering why the trams of lines 7 and 15 were not running early this morning, the cause is quite simple. This morning around 5.40 am, a driver had driven a car against a pole of the high-voltage line for the trams. This happened on the Grotesteenweg near the Fruithoflaan. According to the Antwerp police, the driver lost control of the vehicle. Technicians from De Lijn come on site to remedy the problem. The work was completed around 8 a.m. and tram traffic could resume.
The 39-year-old driver suffered minor injuries and was taken to hospital for treatment. He passed a negative breath test, but his car was no longer drivable and had to be towed. This caused traffic disruption to motor vehicles. The exact cause of the accident remains unclear, but it cannot be ruled out that the poor condition of the vehicle’s tires, combined with the heavy rain, may have something to do with it.
In the meantime, the Berchem Koninklijkelaan and Capenberg stops were not served. Alternative shuttle buses deployed to accommodate the stranded travelers.
