There is a new level of UV cleaning on the new water line in Prague
The new water line of the WWTP Prague (NVL), completed on 18 September 2018, is undergoing a successful trial operation and is now supplemented by another stage of disinfection using UV radiation technology. Today, however, a trial operation of UV radiation disinfection was started at NVL.
In the context of the SARS CoV-2 (COVID 19) pandemic, it has been shown that the virus can occur in waste water and standard removal procedures cannot be ensured without standard disinfection treatment procedures. “Despite the low risk of disease transmission, we decided to proceed according to the precautionary principle and supplement the NVL with disinfection of UV radiation in order to respond to the changing needs of wastewater treatment and keep our rivers clean for the next generation,” said Deputy Mayor Petr Hlubuček.
Easily transmitted pathogenic microorganisms noroviruses, adenoviruses, rotaviruses, hepatitis A and E virus, parasitic protozoa, pathogenic bacteria, eg Campylobacter, Escherichia coli, including high-risk pathogens with acquired antibiotic resistance, occur in wastewater. For the WWTP as well as for other well-operated wastewater treatment plants, the used technological processes of wastewater treatment have a large effect on the removal of viruses and other pathogens and coronaviruses in the active majority may not survive this process.
NVL consists of three main parts – mechanical-chemical, biological and third stage of purification. According to the original decision of the City of Prague, as the client of the New Water Line, the third stage of cleaning was prepared for the future possibility of installing UV disinfection. Two sets of lamps have now been installed in the two prepared troughs, which ensure the quality of disinfected water of class C according to Regulation (EU) No. 2020/741 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 25 May 2020 on minimum requirements for water reuse.
The work worth CZK 46 million excluding VAT was started by the contractor of the New Water Line of the ÚČOV Praha Association in November 2020 and completed in August 2021. At present, trial operation has begun and its first parts will be validation tests to confirm the efficiency of the installed equipment. The addition of the third stage of treatment with disinfection of WWTP by radiation is a contribution to ensuring the quality of water in a significant watercourse of the Vltava during further use of Vltava waters under the New Water Line of the WWTP.
