Rtl today – employment: Luxembourg is still hiring hard
Employment has continued to grow in Luxembourg since the coronavirus crisis. For residents and cross-border commuters.
“The progression of salaried employment continues” announces Statec. In the second quarter of 2021, the number of jobs in Luxembourg increased by 0.8%.
Highlight : the employment of residents has grown faster than that of cross-border workers over this three month period. Over one year, however, it is cross-border workers who are pulling Luxembourg upwards (+4.5 compared to + 3% for people living in Luxembourg). With the French in the lead (+ 5.3%), ahead of the Belgians (+ 3.8%) and the Germans (+ 3.5%). A good omen as the frontiers of the Hexagon live a period of uncertainty with a strong “surprise” tax which must be corrected shortly.
Over one year, the general increase in employment in Luxembourg is 3.7%. An impressive figure that can be explained by “the exceptional destruction of jobs” at the start of the Covid crisis, during the first confinement. Many positions had been lost, before being found a few months later. Statistically, the “rebound” effect is therefore very important.
“In each economic sector, jobs have been created compared to the first quarter of 2021, which has not been observed since the second quarter of 2020 marked by the consequences of confinement” further specifies Statec. The administration and other public services also show quarterly growth “the strongest” with + 1.6% compared to the first quarter of 2021.
