The Italian series debuts Netflix with the young Tabasco and Grieco protagonists in the role of two sisters separated at birth: it will be distributed in 190 countries
This Thursday, a new Italian series debuts in 190 countries around the world, bringing them back to a place and a time that have forcefully entered the collective imagination, even abroad: the Rome of the Dolce Vita. set in the sixties playground, a new Netflix title that sees Leonardo D’Agostini behind the camera (Silver Ribbon for best new director in 2019 with The sample) and Anna Negri (Child). At the center of the story (in six episodes), the relationship between two very different girls, yet united in a visceral way: Nora, a young carousel, and Rosa, a girl without too many practical difficulties, who is part of Roma bene. They seem light years away. They will discover that they are sisters. In addition to being very exciting, it was of great interest for me to make this leap back in time, explains Simona Tabasco (Nora), 27 years old. And it wasn’t easy, because everything had to be studied in detail: from the clothes to the cars, to the way of speaking. My rather modern character for: a girl who has traveled, lived around the world, and then returned to Rome.
Lia Grieco too (Rosa), 27, has learned several things thanks to the work of historical reconstruction: I realized how radically life has changed for women. I was amazed by the fact that in some scenes in which normality is represented, in fact, the slaps are given very lightly just as certain very evident appreciations were not unusual, accepted without giving too much weight. Fortunately, things have changed. In filming the series, these two young actresses became great friends: We met at auditions and a bond was created that grew during the shoot. We see each other often now, they admit. For both, the most difficult scenes to shoot were the roller coaster scenes. I don’t know how many takes were made, but we spent at least a full day up there, up and down, Tabasco explains. In general, all the rides had also been rebuilt, as if they were from that period … a real funfair of the sixties. The series not only tells their story, but that of several families whose paths inevitably intertwine from the moment the two sisters are separated.
This consent to explore various issues, including that of growth, which is not just, and choices that can also change destinies, explain the actresses. I hope that many people will love this project at least when we have loved it, comments Grieco. An Italian project that aims abroad and which has at its center the relationship between two young women can only bring to mind the work of Elena Ferrante. There could be a red thread in this sense – they admit – even if the result is a very different series compared to the adaptation of theBrilliant friend. Here too we tell of how, growing up, we lose a certain ingenuity and face a flood of challenges, which are the ones through which we choose which people to become. This is why we believe that it is a product that can please several generations by combining them.
