Rome: ecological Sunday postponed until after the elections

As per the calendar, February 5, 2023 was scheduled for traffic block in Rome for the implementation of the fourth of five ‘ecological Sundaysplanned for the 2022-2023 winter season, with a total driving ban for private traffic in the Ztl Green Band. However the Municipality of Rome has decided to postpone the ecological Sunday of February 5th due to the upcoming regional elections in Lazio, let’s find out what happened.

ROME: ECOLOGICAL SUNDAY FEBRUARY 5, 2023 POSTPONED

Indeed, on the Campidoglio website we read that in view of the regional elections scheduled for 12 and 13 February 2023 it is necessary reprogram the ecological Sunday scheduled for February 5, so as to allow the smooth running of the election campaign. In short, ubi maior minor cessat. The electoral appointment – points out the note from the Municipality – cannot be foreseen at the time of the scheduling of the traffic jam days, requested this decision (shared with the Prefect of Rome) so as to balance the interest in environmental protection with information and comparison of ballot boxes. Fortunately, the fourth of five ecological Sundays it is not canceled but only postponed: it will in fact be recovered Sunday 26 February 2023always in the same way.

ECOLOGICAL SUNDAYS ROME 2023: HOURS OF THE TRAFFIC PROHIBITION

On the occasion of the next ecological Sunday in Rome which, at this point, will be held on 26 February 2023, the total ban on driving in the Green Band for private traffic (with exceptions) it will be active at the following times:

  • from 7:30 to 12:30;
  • from 16:30 until 20:30.

The exceptions mainly electric or hybrid vehicles, vehicles powered by methane, LPG or Bi-Fuel (with engines at least Euro 3 petrol + LPG or petrol + methane), vehicles with Euro 6 petrol engine, 2-wheel mopeds with Euro 2 4-stroke engine and later, 4-stroke Euro 3 and later motorcycles, shared vehicles and those serving people with disabilities, vehicles used for the transport of people undergoing essential therapies or health treatments for serious illnesses.

After that of February 26, the fifth and last ecological Sunday in Rome for this winter will take place on March 26, 2023.

ROME: WHAT IS THE GREEN BAND?

As repeatedly repeated, the blocking of traffic in Rome on the occasion of ecological Sundays concerns the circulation in the so-called Green bandi.e. the limited traffic area which includes a large part of the municipal territory within the Grande Raccordo Anulare, whose boundaries have also changed recently. The structural rules of the Green Band established on permanent prohibition of access and circulation from Monday to Saturday h24 for pre-Euro 1, Euro 1 and Euro 2 petrol and diesel fueled vehicles, for Euro 3 diesel fueled vehicles and for pre-Euro 1 and Euro 1 petrol and diesel mopeds and motorcycles pre-Euro 1, Euro 1 and Euro 2.
