Mechelen will leave corona terraces this winter, Antwerp and… (Interior)
“Before corona, we already wanted more terraces in the city. Especially in the winter. That is why we decided earlier to give the catering industry more space”, says Mechels alderman for Economy Greet Geypen (Vld-Groen-m+). The extensive terraces may remain in place until the end of March next year.
also in Heist-op-den-Berg is that the case. “We are therefore extending the current regulations for the winter terraces,” says alderman for Economy Patrick Feyaerts (Open Vld). “Landlords are allowed to winter-proof their terraces by sealing them on three sides, but make sure that you can see through for road safety.”
In Winch the terraces may remain until the end of October, but on Monday it was decided that catering operators may exceptionally keep and cover their summer terrace this winter.
also in Yellow the permit for the extensive terraces on the public domain will expire at the end of October. “At the beginning of November, the catering businesses must remove the extensions,” it sounds to the city. “But because visitors, traders and catering businesses are enthusiastic about the terrace extensions, we are looking at whether they can be followed up in the coming years.”
Normally, the summer terraces also have to be closed from November 16, but Yellow says that it may remain until February 28, 2022. The reason is, among other things, that the annual Palmenmarkt fair will have a winter edition this year and the Geel Winter event is also planned in December.
“In Puurs-Saint-Amands not so many catering establishments have put a wider terrace,” says mayor Koen Van den Heuvel (CD&V). “Where that did happen, the larger terraces may continue to exist after 1 October.
In Bornem the city council was already considering an extension of the extensive terraces. Original but will last until the end of July. “During the city council we already decided that the catering businesses that have a temporary extension of their terrace may keep it until the end of this year,” says Mayor Kristof Joos (N-VA).
Free up parking spaces
In Antwerp there are over 500 extensive terraces. For now, allowed to stand until October 15. It is not yet considered whether or not it will be extended. In mortar the extensive terraces may remain until the end of the year. In principle, the normal terrace permit will apply again from next year.
Over a year ago, the city authorities of Turnhout and the local catering industry drawn up a terrace plan. On three sides of the Grote Markt, the chairs and tables took up a much larger area than before. “That arrangement will be maintained for a few more weeks,” says Mayor Paul Van Miert (N-VA). “One of the weeks we have to make a new decision. There is a good chance that the terrace plan will remain after that. We will probably free up some parking spaces that are due to terraces.”
also Herentals has yet to make a decision about the winter terraces. “We have already received a request from various catering operators to extend their terrace extensions,” says Herentals mayor Mien Van Olmen (CD&V). “That is why our city services are currently investigating what the are.”
