Prague 6 introduces the first street where cars are not allowed before school starts
New measures, which are not yet very widespread in the Czech Republic, are being introduced in Prague 6 in front of the Hanspaulka Elementary School. So far only experimentally. Half an hour before the start of school, no motor vehicle is allowed in Na Čihadle Street in the section between the intersection with Finkovská and Na Hanspaulce Streets. The reason is safety and emissions from internal combustion engines, which children have to breathe.
The measure introduced today is still valid only until October 8. This is a pilot project. The ban is alerted by traffic signs, which will be checked by city police officers. “The aim is to calm down traffic around the school and ensure greater safety for all those who move here on foot, by bike, scooter or exit from public transport,“Prague 6 stated on its website.
The introduction of a so-called school street in the Czech Republic is not very common, but it already exists, for example, in Prague 20, Říčany, Kadan and Nymburk. However, it is widespread in a number of European cities, for example in Paris, for example, they have turned a large part of the streets in front of schools into permanent pedestrian zones.
The School Friends Club wants to reduce the number of children who drive to school
The initiator of the pilot project was the Hanspaulka Elementary School Friends Club. “With complaints about the ever-increasing morning traffic at the school, the situation between pedestrians and cars, the unbreathable air, parents and the school turned to us more and more often. “ says Martina Galušková from the Hanspaulka Elementary School Friends Club.
During the test run, City Hall wants to verify whether the measure has helped or needs to be adjusted. “We have prepared an accompanying campaign and materials that will advise parents on how to take transport to school differently. I firmly believe that I will be able to reduce the number of children who bring close to school by car. “ adds Galušková, who otherwise perceives the surroundings of the school as calm and safe. The project encourages children to walk safely to school within walking distance.
If parents drive their children to school for various reasons, they can best park in Na Hanspaulce Street, where there are so-called K + R places and usually free parking spaces within the blue parking zones for holders of parking permits in paid parking zones. The restriction does not apply to cars transporting ZTP cardholders and the departure of permanent residents from the closed section.
