Project Prague is blooming – establish your own flowery meadow for pollinating insects
Entomologists from the Faculty of Environment of the Czech University of Life Sciences (CULS) in Prague are launching the Prague Blooms project. It provides garden owners in Prague and the surrounding area with seeds with a suitable species composition of plants to establish their own flowery meadow to support many species of insect pollinators.
Finally, I will involve the public in a standardized census of this endangered insect. The data will help map the current situation associated with the housing of pollinators in cities. “The best time for a flowery meadow is to be established now in September and October, and even small areas with an area of 10 square meters are enough,” added project leader Filip Harabiš.
Gardeners and the general public will receive all support from specialists for establishing their insect meadow, in addition to seeds and instructions, and will be able to participate in other activities – insect monitoring or competition for the most beautiful meadow. Private gardens are areas with huge potential for supporting drunks. Interesting in cities, relatively large green areas and this untapped potential in the context of declining pollinator diversity in the surrounding landscape is growing. In many metropolises, there are projects that seek to support the biodiversity of private gardens and parks, for example by creating areas with a local nectar-bearing composition of meadow communities and subsequent monitoring of the condition of these sites.
“During the first year of the Prague Flourish pilot project, we were contacted by many enthusiastic gardeners interested in establishing a flower meadow in their private garden. This year we managed to find funds so that we could provide direct support for these activities, “added Harabiš.
more often, we encounter evidence that human activity is causing a significant decline in global diversity. Intensification of agriculture, changes in landscape management and urbanization are among the most frequently mentioned processes that negatively diverse. Several alarming studies have emerged that point to an enormous decline in insect biodiversity. We are seeing this critical decline especially in the groups we need the most for our lives, these are species providing so-called ecosystem services. We consider insect species, for example, to be irreplaceable pollinators, which we consider to be a complete substitute even in modern times. Beekeeping alone is not enough, as the honey bee is involved in the pollination of many species of plants with a relatively small amount and some of them are not even able to pollinate at all.
One of the ways to help drunks in cities and the surrounding area is to establish at least small flower meadows. These areas function as important oases of nectar in the middle of the urban desert. The project is supported by the City of Prague through grant competitions and with its support, scientists are setting up areas to support drunks in public spaces and school gardens. This year, it also targets private gardens. If you have a piece of garden that you are willing to lend to drunks, write to: [email protected]
