Artistic graphics in the world of reproduction: Etchings of the painter Bedřich Havránek National Gallery – Trade Fair Palace
In the 19th century, lithography, steel engraving and wood engraving techniques held dominant positions in the field of reproduction and utility graphics. However, the “long century” was also characterized by the development of so-called artistic free or graphics, ie graphics understood as a separate work of art. In the second third of the century, however, graphic art was largely limited to its reproductive and informative role.
One of the few artists who devoted himself to artistic graphics in this period was the painter Bedřich Havránek (1821 – 1899), whose bicentennial we are commemorating this year. In addition to the resulting graphics sheets, this graphics cabinet presents examples of stav – interphase printouts, consisting of continuous plate printing before completion, which inform artists, for example, where to add shadows or work out details. At first glance, some of the graphics may appear to be identical, but a careful look shows that the degree of processing, lighting construction and modeling differ.
You will find the exhibition on the fourth floor.
