Copenhagen will have a new container terminal in 2023
By & Havn and Copenhagen Malmö Port have agreed on the basic principles for a new container terminal in Ydre Nordhavn, Copenhagen.
The location of the new container terminal means that goods to the capital in Denmark can still be delivered close to the customers, which saves the environment from extra emissions and minimizes congestion on the Danish road network, points out Copenhagen Malmö Port, CMP.
The existing container terminal at Levantkaj in Nordhavn in Copenhagen is still in full operation, but will in the next few years be moved to Ydre Nordhavn with new, modern facilities. And not least, it is important that the new terminal comes with an opportunity for expansion.
The expansion will take place as freight volumes increase and new logistics companies, such as a distribution center, start up, CMP further informs.
Extremely important infrastructure
Today, just over 75 percent of imported goods handle Denmark, and the corona pandemic has made it clear how important it is to ensure global utilities and goods can continue to be delivered across national borders.
Therefore, a well-functioning container terminal near Copenhagen is an important infrastructure and at the same time an important and sustainable supply artery for the capital region and the rest of Eastern Denmark. The location will mean less necessary on the roads as well as a greener Denmark.
Always been a trading town
By & Havn will build the new container terminal. The CEO of By & Havn, Anne Skovbro, is therefore looking forward to its completion.
– Copenhagen always has a trading city, and it is very important that we can contribute to the city’s historical and commercial significance. As an important key point in the distribution and with a location close to the end users, we can at the same time make it as sustainable as possible. With the relocation of the container terminal from Levantkaj to Ydre Nordhavn, we are really considering the next stages of the sustainable development of Nordhavn, where Levantkaj will in future be developed as a new residential area for existing and future generations of Copenhageners, says Anne Skovbro.
With a location at the forefront of Ydre Nordhavn, the new container terminal will be located in a new urban area with a well-developed and modern infrastructure, together with dedicated areas for the logistics of the future. Work on the construction of the new Nordhavn tunnel under Svanemølle Bay is well underway, and when the tunnel is completed in 2027, transport to and from the container terminal will have direct access to the motorway network around Copenhagen via the tunnel.
– More traffic on the blue highway
CMP, which operates the existing container terminal, looks forward to welcoming the new container terminal. Barbara Scheel Agersnap, CEO of Copenhagen Malmö Port, has the following comment:
– We are extremely pleased that we have agreed on the principles for the current container terminal, which will be moved to the recently fulfilled areas in Ydre Nordhavn. This ensures that Copenhagen retains the basis for its important container traffic, and a large workplace remains in the city. More traffic on the blue motorways is a cornerstone in the transition to a greener transport sector, and therefore the new full-service container terminal in Copenhagen will benefit the climate, including consolidating the future supply of goods to Greater Copenhagen and the whole of Eastern Denmark.
