Mirvald & Kaláb: Geometry Code | Villa Pellé
Vladislav Mirvald and Jan Kaláb decipher the Geometry Code. The Villa Pellé Gallery, in collaboration with the Kampa Museum, has prepared artistic meetings of artists who have never met for August and September. the order applies not only in the world of artistic or technical representation. This code connects this year’s exactly centuries-old universe, the often unjustly somewhat neglected, but original and excellent Louny concrete artist Vladislav Mirvalda, with the dynamic world of graffiti and street art master Jan Kaláb.
Details are provided by the curator of the exhibition Martina Vítková in the thirty-first episode of the podcast KulTýden.
He personally meets Mirvald’s work at the exhibition for the first time: “I was more widely aware of Mr. Mirvald’s work as a Czech geometric abstraction, but it was only on the occasion of this exhibition that I began to study his work more,” describes the circumstances of the creative meeting with his predecessor Jan Kaláb and adds: “I decided to take this exhibition conceptually as a reaction to the work of Vladislav Mirvalda. I have reduced my palette to white, black, red and blue. This forced me to focus more on the shape and dynamics set to the maximum contrast of the two colors. “ Although Jan Kaláb does not know Mirvald’s vicissitudes of life and will see his major works live during the preparation of the exhibition, it is clear that the inner creative affinity, given, among other things, the code of geometry, will create a strong synergistic effect and make the exhibition an extraordinary artistic experience.
The name of the exhibition may remind someone of a secret conspiracy code, but the opposite is true. Geometry is a language that can communicate our entire civilization, regardless of the anthropological and cultural specifics of continents and regions. Circles, squares and triangles are understandable to everyone, and geometric shapes are not only a key and defining part of many disciplines, but also carry spiritual and mystical symbolism. A point is an individual, a circle of the sun, a square of the earth, and a triangle personify the divine power. Geometry is becoming an important tool of visual art from antiquity to modernity. In Villa Pellé, her code will help uncovering two extraordinary personalities of our art world in recent years – Vladislav Mirvald and Jan Kaláb. The fascinating order of geometry thus connected two apparent antipodes, a settled high school and university teacher and restorer, limited formally and practically by life in two totalitarian systems, with an artist who swung the time and possibilities of freedom to revolt.
“With the idea of organizing Vladislav Mirvalda’s exhibition together, the Kampa Museum appealed to me more than a year ago, and during discussions about its form, the idea arose to invite some of the contemporary artists who are close to a geometric worldview. Jan Kaláb was a clear choice for me. His vision of a world in which geometry plays an important role is personally close to me. At the same time, as an artist, he is not afraid of experiments and makes extensive use of all the means of current technology that were not available at all during Mirvald’s lifetime. I am convinced that this art duel will be attractive for visitors to the Villa Pellé Gallery, “ explains Vladana Rýdlová, director of the Villa Pellé Gallery. The Geometry Code exhibition will be open from August 4 to September 26.
