Prague will open one of the passages to the river on the Smetana embankment, the so-called tentacles
Prague will pass through one of the so-called tentacles, ie the passages of the embankment wall to the Vltava, originally intended for capturing (“stalking”) rafts from the river. The passage at Hollar on Smetana’s embankment, including the adjacent area by the river, will run the company of Michal Řepka, known in the music world as Mike Trafik, this season. It prepares the sale of snacks and a cultural program. Previously, a tent was used by a restaurant that was fired.
The tent is on the stairs next to the Hollar buildings and connects the waterfront with Divadelní Street. It is followed by an area with seating right by the river. The whole space will gradually start to open to people from the middle of next week, the operators are still arranging the equipment and planning the program. According to Řepka, it should be as calm as possible due to the animals present. “We plan to do very intimate acoustic concerts to harmonize with the river and the surrounding area,” he said.
According to him, the space should be open daily from early morning until 22:00 and anyone will be given the opportunity to participate in the program.
The operator for this season was selected in a tender by the city company Trade Center Prague (TCP), which is in charge of the embankments. He has a contract until October, according to the curator of the Prague floodplains from TCP Petr Hozman, the decision on further action will be decided in the autumn also on the basis of experience with the operation.
The passage is owned by the city’s Technical Road Administration (TSK), which previously leased it to a restaurant. According to Deputy Mayor Adam Scheinherr (Prague Sobě), the operator stipulated in the contract that he had a clear passage through the tent, which he did not fulfill and used as an impassable background. In addition, this concept of the company was focused mainly on tourists, which means that it does not correspond to any current city management.
The Mayor of Prague 1, Petr Hejma (STAN), stated that Prague 1, in cooperation with the city, placed three historic lamps and a camera that monitors the entrance when entering the passage. He also mentioned a tent, which is a short distance from the tram stops in Karlovy Lázně. The city district also planned to make this accessible, but a tall maple would have to be felled. A wave of resentment rose against the plan, leaving the tree in the end.
After all, the mayor said that from now on he opens the passage by what the wooden footbridge could lead to another, which according to him will be accessible at least two thirds in the direction from the river and create a cultural space there. From the waterfront, the town hall wants to lead up the stairs after an agreement with the conservationists, Hejma added. City councilor Hana Třeštíková (Prague Sobě) also mentioned that the city is preparing a cultural program on the Smetana embankment itself, where it previously expanded the pedestrian area by removing one lane from the intersection with Národní.
