Prague is testing a shorter interval of traffic lights at the busy IP Pavlova intersection
Pedestrians work mainly on a shortened cycle, and full traffic should show the benefits of trams.
At one of the busiest intersections in Prague, an experiment began to shorten the cycle at traffic lights. At the intersection at IP Pavlova Square, the original 100 shorter interval began to be used. The change will shorten waiting for pedestrians and should also bring smoother tram traffic.
“The 80-second cycle is set on weekdays from 6:30 to 20:00, ie previously used programs for morning and afternoon rush hours. It is set for the exam only this week, ie from 10 May to 14 May, but it is possible that an extension of one week is being initiated in connection with the entry of children into school, “ said Barbora Lišková, spokeswoman for the Technical Administration of Communications (TSK). According to her, it would be more beneficial for TSK to perform a similar test when there is “normal” operation of trams, when drivers do not take turns at IP Pavlova.
He pointed out the change in interval Facebook profile of the Prague Tram, according to which cycle, even a shortened interval allows the passage of two trams in one. Trams thus have more time off than in the commonly used mode. There is a certain benefit for pedestrians, who now do not have to wait so long for the green.
“A positive impact on tram handling at IP Pavlova and better pedestrian throughput, an extension of the front vehicles at Wilsonov and Nuselský most at the entrances to the area were expected.” Lišková said. According to her, however, it is not yet possible to state simply what exactly this adjustment will do. “It is a matter of linking the findings to the needs of individual car transport. These are still lower than usual. We will perform the analysis after the test by evaluating the data from the detectors, ” added Lišková.
Outside, the cycle usually has a peak of 50 or 60 seconds at the intersection.
