Airbnb: Prague will offer private apartments for seniors and asylum seekers
The plan to rent apartments from private owners is in an advanced stage of preparation. “We would like to discuss the launch of a pilot project in April,” told HN Prague housing councilor Adam Zábranský (Pirates). He added that the city will probably not be looking for apartments in the center of the metropolis.
The city plans to spend ten million crowns on rentals in the first year. I anticipate that the program will end in the first year with a loss of five million crowns, in the future it should reach zero.
Prague has been struggling in recent years with the housing crisis and ever-rising housing prices. There are about 31,500 flats owned by the municipality and city districts in the capital, out of the original number of 194,000, which became the property of the city after 1991. Privatizations of the city fund have reduced by more than 80 percent.
Prague councilors earlier this week approved a housing strategy that envisages the construction of at least 500 new city dwellings per year by 2030. The city is already planning its own construction and also cooperating, whether it is development companies, construction cooperatives or smaller civic associations. Representatives will discuss the strategy next week.
