The parish of Prague-Hlubočepy called for a new church for decades, the main impetus for the real preparations for the construction ten years ago was the insufficient capacity of the parish church in Zlíchov due to the increase in population in Barrandov. This area includes more than 30,000 people and the Church of St. Filip and Jakub in Zlíchov has a capacity of 80 seats.
The minimalist building of the new church was designed by architects Jakub Žiška and Pavel Šmelhaus and also includes a community center with a hall, club rooms and a café. The premises are to serve not only the parish, but all the inhabitants of Barrandov. They can host concerts, social events, discussions, lectures or exhibitions, in the center there are clubhouses, a library, a children’s corner. There is also a café with an adjacent playground. The operation will follow on from the former Mission Center, which stood on the same site.
Symbol of hope
The church has a traditional single-nave floor plan, a distinctive portal and a tower with bells. The massive cross was not erected until Friday. The sculptor Petr Váňa (the author of the replica of the Marian column in the Old Town Square) and Stanislav Kolíbal, who were also among the invited guests, furnished the interior with liturgical elements. The construction of the church cost 150 million crowns, one third of which is financed by the Prague Archbishopric, which also bought the land from Prague 5. Private donors contribute, according to the parish priest Josef Ptáček, some invest their life savings in the project.
“New church in Prague. Church building is a sign of good times. Their destruction or transformation into calves and warehouses, on the contrary, of bad times. A new church of Christ the Savior was consecrated in Barrandov on the Feast of Christ the King. After the restoration of the Marian Column, another symbol of hope for the future! ”Wrote Ex-Minister of Culture Daniel Herman (KDU-ČSL).
The last phase of construction begins. The new Church of Christ the Savior will open in the fall
