Němcová from ODS won in the district of Prague 1. Hampl did not defend the mandate – ČT24 – Czech Television
24.94 percent of voters used the second round of elections, 38.58 percent voted in the first round a week ago.
Němcová has so far served as a Member of Parliament. “I got up in the morning as a member of parliament and in the evening I go to bed as a senator,” she said after the election.
The new senator will be replaced in the Chamber of Deputies by Jaroslav Vymazal (ODS), a councilor from Jihlava. Other finalists in this year’s Senate elections, Jiří Mašek (ANO) and Petr Bendl (ODS), failed and thus remain in the lower house.
Nemcova wants to defend democratic values and freedoms
The former Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies from 2010 to 2013 is one of the prominent figures on the Czech political scene in recent years. In the lower house of parliament, she is the vice-chairwoman of the election committee and a member of the mandate and immunity committee and the organizing committee.
As Němcová stated earlier, the most important task for her in the Senate will be to defend the constitutional order, democratic values and freedom. “At the same time, there are areas that I have also addressed in the Chamber of Deputies, culture, the media, the area of small tradesmen and entrepreneurs and their support, because they also have a very difficult time now,” she added.
The new senator narrowly missed the election a week ago
The Germans narrowly missed the election in the first round. She received 48.56 percent of the vote, the second Hampl received 20.49 percent. The other candidates won under ten percent of the vote.
There were other big names among the senatorial candidates last week. For example, former member of the upper chamber and businessman Václav Fischer or former director of the Prague Zoo Petr Fejk (Citizens’ Initiative).
The activist and director of the House of National Minorities Jakub Štědroň (ČSSD), university pedagogue Ivo T. Budil (Tricolor), architect Milan Urban (SPD) or a representative of Prague 2 and activist Robert Veverka (Pirates) also sought the votes of voters. The government movement ANO and the KSČM did not present their candidate in this constituency.
In 2014, Václav Hampl (for KDU-ČSL) won in Prague 1. He won 68.44 percent of the vote in the second round. Zdeněk Schwarz (for ODS) finished second. 15 candidates took part in the election.
