There could be a park and new pavilions on the roof of Central Station. Prague supports change
The State Railway Administration is preparing to modify the roof of the Main Railway Station in Prague, where, among other things, new pavilions have been created or the transition from the car park via the main road. Jiří Svoboda, General Director of the Railway Administration, told the E15.cz server. According to the server, the modifications will cost about several million crowns and could start in 2022. The changes were proposed by the city management, but the final form of the modification will still be negotiated with the administration.
Today, there is only a car park on the roof of the underground terminal of the railway station. According to Svoboda, it should be replaced in the future by a park adjacent to Vrchlického sady near the railway station. “The place deserves to be calmed down, we want to divert it from the highway, for example, the greenery,” Svoboda said.
According to a study commissioned by the administration, two new pavilions connected to the check-in hall would be built on the roof. There would be cafes, refreshments and facilities for passengers. The space between the pavilions would be paved and divided by trees with tables and chairs. The study also assumes the creation of a wide transition between the roof of the check-in hall and the opposite Fanta building across the main road, which has six lanes in the given place.
However, the railway administration must agree on adjustments with the municipality. The check-in hall belongs to the administration, but the areas on the roof are already under the administration of the city organization Technical Administration of Roads. According to the server, the railway administration is trying to negotiate that the areas on the roof also belong to the railway.

According to the server, city officials are positive about the changes in the vicinity of the main railway station. “The choice of the park is appropriate, I support it,” said Mayor’s Deputy Petr Hlaváček (for TOP 09) to E15.cz. “The park must coordinate with the tram line. We need to connect the tram from Wenceslas Square and Vinohrady Avenue to Washington Street and the park in front of the station,” he added.
Modifications are also provided by the city’s Planning and Development Institute. “The roof serving as a background for passengers should be connected to the level of the historic building, the park and the interior. The roof also includes facilities for taxis or K + R (places for short car stops at the station, editor’s note),” he said. server spokesman Marek Vácha.
