The largest medarium in Europe with tens of thousands of jellyfish has opened in Prague
A unique project called The World of Jellyfish, which has earned first place in Europe due to its size and number of copies, was created on the occasion of the anniversary of the Pankrác Arcade shopping center. “We wanted to find something new, a leisure activity for visitors,” says Denisa Gálová, the center’s director.
Visitors can expect over ten thousand jellyfish in round aquariums, the largest of which with a capacity of 2000 liters even for entry in the Guinness Book of Records as the largest aquarium for jellyfish in the world. But caring for jellyfish is not easy. “Caring for jellyfish starts with caring for water. The jellyfish is extremely temperature susceptible to the creature, it could get fluctuations or any that would get into the water, “the director of the jellyfish, Vojtěch Pluhař, told the medina.
Jellyfish can’t swim
All 38 aquariums are round, because jellyfish can hardly swim. “They can’t swim, they can be swept away by the current in the ocean, so we let them in there. If the aquarium were square, they would get stuck in one corner, ”explains Pluhař.
Jellyfish are aquatic, mostly marine invertebrates. |
Jellyfish are a 650 million year old species, surpassing the time of the dinosaurs. |
They are classified as Radiata, to Cnidaria and several classes, especially Cubozoa and Scyphozoa with four orders: Stauromedusae, Coronatae, Semaeostomeateae (Rhizostomeateae). ). |
The number of tentacles varies, the small one has 8 to several dozen. |
They react to UV radiation. |
The number of species that will be seen ranges from 23 to 38, depending on which species are currently breeding. “We have interesting species here, such as the immortal jellyfish (Turritopsis dohrnii – editor’s note)which keeps repeating its life cycle is therefore immortal. We also have a lot of big stinging jellyfish, “says Pluhař.
In the care of these animals, they are independent in breeding and feed. “The vast majority of jellyfish we have here are from Prague from our kennel. We have our breeder Mr. Vedral, who breeds all jellyfish for us. There are about eleven people in the world who can reproduce a jellyfish, and he is one of them, so it’s very challenging. Some species also feed on other jellyfish, others on artemia, which are small freshwater shrimps. We also reproduce ourselves, “he adds.
The Medusarium will be open every day from 9 am to 9 pm. The ticket price for an adult is 260 crowns, for a child 170 and the family entrance fee is 550 crowns. There will also be school tours in the morning.
