In two and a half years, car registration plates will run out, they will run out of numbers
The Prague mark consists of a combination of digits, letters A and numbers in the left part and four digits in the right part. The city also registers almost three thousand registration marks on request and hundreds of marks for electric cars. 1,224 million vehicles are registered in the capital.
“In two and a half years, Prague will exhaust all possible combinations, there are only two series of numbers 8 and 9 left,” said Petr Adámek, Deputy Head of Vehicle Registration.
A registration mark that has already been destroyed cannot subsequently be reused and assigned to another vehicle. To illustrate, in September this year alone, the City Department of Traffic Administration carried out the first registration of 7,000 cars and made 1,000 brand exchanges.
The Ministry of Transport is responsible for addressing the future shortage of brand combinations. According to Adámek, proposals for a possible solution and a change in the appearance of brands have already been made in the past. However, no decision has been taken yet.
“We don’t know what will happen,” he said. The Ministry of Transport was unable to respond to the request for a turnaround, but said it would comment on the situation by tomorrow.
Discarded and chopped marks are handed over by the municipality to the owners, ie the Ministry of Transport, which transports the metal for recycling.
In addition to the usual registration marks, the municipality also issues those on request. Since January 1, 2015, when this option arose, the city has registered 2,700 such brands.
“There are about 400 such applications a year,” Adamek said. From April 1, 2019, the city also registered 750 electric cars.
