Individual cities were evaluated according to the quality of life of the inhabitants, the level of the business environment and long-term sustainable development.
“Prague is rated as a balanced innovator in the current Arcadis Sustainable Cities Index. In terms of the quality of life of the inhabitants and the level of the business environment, it is ranked very high worldwide,” said Lenka Matějíčková from the Czech branch of Arcadis.
“The index values, for example, the availability and quality of health care, safety, tourism development, numerous business opportunities and various job offers,” she added.
In the case of sustainable development, Matějíček’s study gives a good assessment of water management and greenery in the city. On the contrary, there is room for improvement in transport, geographical and virtual connection of the city and in the improvement of waste management.
What to improve? Emissions, transport and water management
“Prague’s leading position in the Central European comparison is ensured by the amount of greenery, the availability and quality of health care, and the balance between work and personal life. Prague is very attractive to visitors and supports tourism as much as possible. The index points to the need to limit CO2 emissions, support alternative modes of transport, such as electric cars and bicycle transport, and improve wastewater treatment,” adds Matějíčková.
When solving the traffic situation, according to the study, it is necessary to build parking lots that would connect to the public transport system. Restrictive measures that many European capitals are implementing today include restricting entry into the city center for cars that do not meet certain emission limits, the study further states.
According to Arcadis, the completion of the inner and outer traffic circle and the development of Prague’s public transport network, such as metro line D, are also key. In the overall ranking, London ranks best, followed by Stockholm, Edinburgh, Singapore and Vienna. Within the region, after Vienna and Prague, the best places are Warsaw (54th overall), Budapest (57th) and Moscow (58th).
