30 Berlin ponds, ponds and ditches should not die of thirst – BZ Berlin
When cement mixers destroy nature, a balance must be found. That doesn’t always work close to the construction site and the search for space is tedious. 30 ponds, ponds, ditches with acute water shortages are now to benefit – Berlin’s blue pearls!
If ground is sealed by building, negative points are incurred in a rating system that have to be compensated for elsewhere.
To ensure that the search for such compensation areas does not slow down the planning of new construction projects, the state of Berlin is making advance payments for the investors. With eco-accounts and the eco-measures. Let’s start with the thirsty problem waters in two places.
►Lankegraben pond (Lankwitz): lots of shade, little water, built-up banks. Clean rainwater from roofs is to be fed in here. A hedge of twigs and dead wood is supposed to offer protection to birds and catch blown seeds so that everything turns green.
►Feldweiher, Schleipfuhl (Hellersdorf): One is already dry, the other is filled from a school roof with rain water and once a year with well water. That’s not enough – rainwater is to be seeped away from the surrounding residential areas. Shrubs are to be cleared, reeds are to be planted.

Environment Senator Bettina Jarasch (53, Greens): “We are revitalizing small bodies of water that open up diverse habitats and nature experiences for animals and plants in the middle of the city.”
The first two eco-accounts were the Malchow Auenlandschaft (2019) and the Wuhletal (2021).
